Rice Water – Yes really! Yao women have been using rice water for years for hair. 

Since ancient times Chinese women use rice water for hair. The proteins in rice water strengthen damaged hair and keep it healthy, soft and shiny. 

Want to get hair as long as the Yao women? Here’s how to make your very own rice water or fermented rice water which is more nutritional for hair : 

Rice water wash

  1. Place a vessel full of rice in a large amount of boiling water.
  2. Boil the rice until cooked.
  3. Strain the excess water which should be cloudy in color.
  4. Wait until it’s cooled to a normal temperature, and then add a few drops of your favorite essential oils.
  5. Shampoo your hair and then use rice water. Leave for at least 15 to 20 minutes whilst gently massaging your hair.
  6. Rinse thoroughly.

Fermented rice water wash 

The fermented rice water helps in keeping hair shiny black and silky soft. It also has anti-dandruff, anti-itch, anti-hair-loss properties. With loads of nutrients, fermented rice water makes an excellent conditioner. It brings shine to your hair and helps to keep it strong and healthy.  It also nourishes hair follicles to promote healthy hair growth and improve the overall condition of hair.

How to use – 

  1. Rinse a cup of rice to get rid of any dirt.
  2. Place in a bowl and cover with water for 15 minutes – stirring occasionally.
  3. Strain the water into a plastic bottle.
  4. Leave it at room temperature for a day or until it turns slightly sour and starts to ferment.
  5. Pour into a pan, boil it then allow it to cool.
  6. Add a few drops of tea tree, lavender or rosemary essential oils.
  7. Use the rice water by gently massaging it into your scalp and through the length of your hair.
  8. Rinse thoroughly.
